This class is taught through Roots School: https://rootsvt.com/land-navigation/

Losing your way in the wilderness can be an inconvenience or a life-threatening problem. However, with some simple tools, knowledge, and skills, not only can you avoid getting lost but you can plan and execute off trail travel into amazing back country landscapes or navigate to a specific location when it really counts. Come learn the essentials Saturday and apply them in an off trail map and compass challenge on Sunday.

In this course you will learn how to use map and compass to find out where you are, plan a route to where you want to go, and get there. We will discuss navigation terminology, landscape features, various types of maps, and how to use navigation tools. Most of the time will be spent building awareness of landscape, translating between map and landscape, using tools to navigate in forests and fields in various types of terrain. Expect cool to cold weather. Open to all skill levels and students.

We will be spending all day Sunday off property exploring a wild area practicing our off trail navigation skills. To better facilitate this please bring a packable lunch for Sunday and be prepared to provide your own transportation to a wilderness area no more than half an hour from the roots school property.
