What’s The Deal Here?
Nunivak Farm School rose from the belief that we can all take a more manual, self engaged approach to life. Our founder, Caleb Genereaux, grew up on this farm learning to tend this land and walk these forests. He has pursued skills to let him do it himself from learning to hay and garden, through traditional and naturalist skills, to custom backpacking gear making, dipping into tiny house construction and, most recently, arriving at holistic fruit tree care he has amassed a wealth of knowledge he is looking to share with the North East Kingdom. With over 13 years of teaching experience, Caleb is excited to start to offer classes based in a landscape he knows best to the northern Vermont people who raised him. Come to us for a fun, informative and engaging educational experience.
What’s up with Nunivak? What’s that mean?
Nunivak Island (Central Alaskan Yup'ik: Nunivaaq; Nunivak Cup'ig: Nuniwar)… …is a permafrost-covered volcanic island lying about 30 miles (48 km) offshore from the delta of the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers in Alaska. -Wikipiedia
The current owners of Nunivak Farm, Caleb’s parents Jamie and Steve, lived in Alaska for many years before moving to Vermont in the mid 90’s. They took a romantic and very sketchy boat trip out to Nunivak island and, while it wasn’t where they fell in love, it is where they think of when they remember love in Alaska, hense the name of the farm and, in turn, our school.
